Cuzco

After dealing with the jet lag in Lima we moved on to Cuzco to adjust to the altitude before Alan set off on the Inca Trail. Cuzco was the centre of the Inca empire. It’s a beautiful city with lovely squares and avenues and it’s fair share of churches, museums and archaeological sites. We didn’t realise this at first as it was pouring with rain and the streets were awash with muddy water!
Once the sun came out we were able to appreciate it and realise that we were only one block from the main square.
There is always something happening in the Plaza de Armas – one day a ceremonial march, the next a Saint being carried round the streets and into the cathedral, after that, police with riot shields at a protest by agricultural workers. Close by the road had been dug up to enable archaeological investigations which had to be protected in plastic during the deluge.
